LinkedIn post length

A LinkedIn post can contain up to 3,000 characters, spaces and line breaks included. The counter above highlights anything past that point.

Other LinkedIn fields have their own caps. Type the number in the Target field to check them with the same box:

Post3,000
Comment1,250
Profile headline220
About section2,600

These figures come from LinkedIn's Help Center and the profile editor; LinkedIn adjusts them from time to time, and the editor's own counter has the final word. LinkedIn does not say how it counts emoji. This page counts Unicode characters (a simple emoji is 1), so leave a little room if you use many emoji.

The "see more" cut

In the feed, a post is cut after the first lines with a "see more" link. The cut depends on the screen width and on the line breaks, so it is not a fixed number of characters; on desktop it falls after about three lines, roughly 200 characters of continuous text. Mobile shows less. Put the point of the post in the opening line, and avoid starting with an empty line, which uses up the visible space.

Formatting that survives

  • Line breaks are kept and count as one character each.
  • LinkedIn has no bold or italic in posts. Unicode "bold" letters exist, but screen readers read them as mathematical symbols and search does not match them, so they hurt more than they help.
  • Hashtags count as text; the hashtag counter above shows how many you used.

Writing a long article rather than a post? Switch to the word counter for reading time. Sharing the same text on X? The X character counter applies X's weighted count.
